At last Wednesday’s SubClub meeting, held at the vibrant Chilango in Uptown, we welcomed guest speakers from the newly reimagined Uptown Farmers Market. Over beverages, about a dozen attendees gathered to hear exciting updates about the market's upcoming inaugural full season, set to launch on June 12, 2025, at the Girard Avenue Plaza.
Farmers market representatives, Amy Sanborn and Dan Sutton, shared a plethora of information about the new Uptown Farmer's Market which included location, a teaser of vendors, and their need for volunteers. The market will run every Thursday from 4 to 8 PM through September 25, offering a dynamic mix of local produce, artisanal goods, and community events. The speakers highlighted the market's mission to foster a healthy community by providing access to sustainable, mostly organic or pesticide-free produce, and supporting local entrepreneurs, with more than half of the vendors being women-owned businesses.
The market's transformation stems from a collaborative effort among several neighborhood associations, including East Isles, East Bde Maka Ska, Lowry Hill, The Wedge/Lowry Hill East, and South Uptown. This partnership aims to create a more inclusive and sustainable marketplace that reflects the diverse Uptown community. The meeting also sparked conversation about how Uptown Rotary might support and partner with the Farmers Market in the season ahead. Ideas included hosting an informational booth on select nights, volunteering, and offering promotional or logistical support. It was a fun and informative evening and a great opportunity to engage with another organization making a positive impact in our shared neighborhood—laying the groundwork for potential future collaborations.
